Rheumatoid Arthritis : Antibody Receptor Identity

    Author: levlarry
Subject: Antibody Receptor Identity
Posted: 21 November 2009 at 7:50am

UAB researchers discover antibody receptor identity, propose renaming immune-system gene<DIV =date>Published: Friday, November 20, 2009 - 09:23 <SPAN =terms>in Biology & Nature
<DIV =date>
<DIV =article-s>Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) have uncovered the genetic identity of a cellular receptor for the immune system's first-response antibody, a discovery that sheds new light on infection control and immune disorders. The discovery is such a crucial part of immunology that UAB researchers, in conjunction with Japanese researchers, are asking that the gene linked to this antibody receptor be renamed to better describe its role in early immune responses. The proposed name is the Fc mu receptor (FCMR) gene; it describes a key region of the immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody that binds this receptor. IgM is by far the largest antibody in the circulatory system, and it is the first antibody on the scene in response to an invading pathogen, such as a virus or bacteria. The IgM-tagged pathogens then trigger various immune responses through this receptor FCMR. The new findings are reported online in the Journal of Experimental Medicine and in the publication's Nov. 23 print edition.

Previously, researchers who had identified this gene thought they were dealing with a molecule that regulated cell death and they named it "toso" – a reference to the Japanese medicinal sake often drunk on New Year's Day to symbolize a long life. But the toso name is inaccurate, as were many of the earlier descriptions of this gene's function, says Hiromi Kubagawa, M.D., a professor in the UAB Department of Pathology and the lead study author.

"The new study shows, and DNA analysis helped us to confirm, that the Fc mu receptor is made from the gene we describe," Kubagawa says. "This is a fundamental discovery that science has been waiting to answer for nearly 30 years."

To identify the true FCMR gene, the UAB researchers used chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells as a source of this gene, since such leukemia cells are known to over-express the Fc mu receptor. This enabled researchers to identify the FCMR gene more efficiently.

The potential novel agents that target and regulate FCMR function hold promise in fighting cancer, AIDS and autoimmune disorders, says Kubagawa. The genetic description and request for renaming the gene does not prove it has a direct role in any particular disease; however, it fills a crucial gap in understanding the science behind immune deficiencies and allergy diseases.

Source: University of Alabama at Birmingham

I think that there was too much that was and wasn't answered. So much insinuation and opinions. You know how I feel about that and you know how I feel about you and your fiends tellin more than or less than the truth. It would be so refreshing if Pincushion would rewrite the HOAX" thread and post only what she knows to be the truth. I mean c'mon, maybe in the UK you can call a medical facility and say, "Hey, this is Lady Pincushion, I need the personal information about Diane." and the facility give it to her. I want the name of the medical centre she called and they gave out personal information. Is that asking too much? Do you really believe that some "confidential informant" contacted Pincushion and told her that a fraud was about to take place? Seriously? That would mean that Spelunker told someone that she was going to fake her death and her confidant was a confidant of Pincushion? Does that even make sense? Why would this person be unwilling to come forward and clear up the slop? Pig slop. To listen to Pincushion, you would think that i wrote the "HOAX" post. Because I talk about Spelunker, she attacks me for the pain to Waddie and janie and all. Newsflash, Pincushion, if you are so concerned about hurting people, don't post it. But then, you looked at it as your moment of glory, your greatest AI moment in AI history Pincushion. Anyone that reads your "HOAX" posts knows the euphoria you were feeling. Like I said before, Lorster, you and the rest of the "group" need to find another way to get good feelings than the way yous usually do, by causing havoc in other members of this forums lifes.

LEV

Message Board Tips and Tricks : A case of Infective Arthritis

    Author: indra3040
Subject: A case of Infective Arthritis
Posted: 21 November 2009 at 7:14am

This is my first post here and I'll appreciate if anybody comes out with valuable suggestions.

It all started about a month ago when one fine morning I found that there's an extreme amount of pain in my neck and I could barely lift my head out of my pillow. The pain subsided with painkillers(paracetamol based) in a day or two, however I found that there's an extreme amount of pain on my right ankle with swollen and redness and it was impossible for me to walk. The doctor ordered blood test and my uric acid was found to be 5.8. The doctor suggested that it was a case of high uric acid and I was put on Zyloric for two weeks or so.
In two weeks the Uric acid level decreased to 4.5 however the pain refused to go away. So I went on another doctor and he said that it was not related to uric acid and he suggested infective arthritis. As per his advise I two four antibiotic injections and also was put on Inmecin-R (with antacid). This time there was marked improvement and the redness and swollenness subsided within a day or two. After around 7 days I tried to stop taking Inmecin-R and found that the pain in my ankle returned immediately(although the redness and swollenness did not). So, the doctor advised me to continue Inmecin-R for 7 days more which I am doing now.

My question: Is there anyone who faced symptoms like this? For how long I can continue taking Inmecin-R (I think it upsets my stomach) without significant side effects? Is there any chance of any permanent damage to my ankle? What is the chance of the appearance of disease recurrently?

Thanks in advance. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Indra.
