...just wanted to add (you're thinking, she's adding to that long post???!! hehe)

What could have caused the hip to suddenly be so bad like that?
I then thought about the night before ...I had dinner at a friends and ate something that I don't usually eat. She made a rice, curry, shrimp with pineapple dish (yeah, it was yummy!!) ...but I pretty much never eat pineapple, and there was alot in there.
I researched it, and I found that pineapple is actually a good thing to have...is that right?
...confusing.
but, has anyone ever had a flare up after consuming a bunch of pineapple?

Hello, just a thought that passed through my mind as I read your post---pineapple contains an enzyme, bromelain, that in clinical studies has been appreciated to be a "natural" anti-inflammatory. Taking that into consideration, it could be argued that as you seldom eat pineapple, the bromelain, once released into the blood stream through digestion, did just what it has been found to do, reduced inflammation and began to shift the various components of exited synovial contents. That shift might account for a flare.

Theorizingly, Joan

curry is also has anti inflammatory benefits.  it takes more than one dinner to come up with a personal correlation....track your diet and your reactions...or perhaps try an elimination diet

Buckeye, hello and thanks for reminding me of the curry-connection. I applaud the tracking reactions idea, and have personally engaged in more than one elimination diet. It can be quite surprising what acts as triggers at different points in time and life.

Thanks...yeah I thought I read about the anti-inflammatory in the pineapple..that's what was so confusing. Good to note about the curry too. As far as the shift....that's confusing to me. I was actually feel pretty well. the hip was better...everything was pretty much better...then BAM!! ...major hard time walking, and never ever felt anything like that in my life.

As far as diet, remember I'm new to RA...well not even diagnosed...it's just what I've determined it's gotta be. So, I'm kinda a health nut, (go figure)...and so I researched for what's a good diet for those with RA, and it looks like for the most part I already eat it. I suppose that's a good thing, but wouldn't that make me less susceptible?

Anyway, thanks so much for everyone's input. I really appreciate it.

For what it's worth, there are a number of rheumatological diseases that announce themselves loud and clear with no forewarning at all.

The disease "gout" [not to be confused with pseudogout] is known to cause a flareup almost overnight. Gout has a connection with purine-rich foods which are classified as follow:

Foods very high in purines include:

  • hearts
  • herring
  • mussels
  • yeast
  • smelt
  • sardines
  • sweetbreads

Foods moderately high in purines include:

  • anchovies
  • grouse
  • mutton
  • veal
  • bacon
  • liver
  • salmon
  • turkey
  • kidneys
  • partridge
  • trout
  • goose
  • haddock
  • pheasant
  • scallops
Not sure how much you would have to eat to activate the disease.

But if I understood correctly, you think the pineapple CAUSED the inflammation. If so, that's not likely to be true. If anything, the pineapple might have REDUCED the inflammation [although I have no clue as to how much you would need to consume for it to work].

You might ask your doctor to check your uric acid level.
